S-IMEW not only solidified my interest in mineral exploration and mining but helped mould it into my passion and career. We were exposed to many different aspects of the mining world including both scientific research and industry. The workshop gave me an understanding of how truly diverse the sector is. I also made many contacts, and more importantly friends who I still have to this day

The Noranda-Val-d'Or field trip including the underground visits was the highlight of S-IMEW for me. The fondest memories are really of the friendships/relationships developed during the two weeks. I am still in touch with most people through Facebook and like seeing what others are up to.

S-IMEW helped me become more confident with applied aspects of geology through field trips, mine tours and mapping exercises. At S-IMEW I was exposed to aspects of geology that I did not learn at university and I really enjoyed discussions and networking opportunities with fellow students from across Canada.

S-IMEW gave me an opportunity to see an entirely new segment of the industry; several deep underground mines, a smelter, and two mining districts with unique geology and mining challenges. Although my career has taken me more towards the production mining side of the industry, the geologic foundation that S-IMEW helped build has been extremely valuable. The networking opportunities were excellent, and I continue to stay in contact with several people from that group to this day.

My fondest memory of S-IMEW 2010 field trip was getting to visit an underground mine. But overall the best part of the trip was getting to meet the other students from across the country. So many amazing personalities who I was able to become very close with and have endless laughs with made the experience unforgettable. The volunteers who planned and attended the trip with us were so fun and everything was so well organized it made us all feel like rock stars.

S-IMEW was a thrilling dive into the mineral exploration and mining domain. The camaraderie fostered there proved instrumental, as years later I still communicate and work with fellow participants. While my professional journey early on shifted to the oil and gas sector after switching consulting firms, the foundation in mineral exploration remains integral to my current role. Now as a Senior Geologist, my focus extends to exploring New Energy prospects in the subsurface—embracing challenges like Carbon Capture Sequestration, Geothermal Energy, and extracting Lithium from subsurface brines.

The biggest impact that S-IMEW has made on my life and career are the long lasting connections and friendships I made with both industry professionals and colleagues during and after the course.

S-IMEW not only provided me with a practical view of the mineral exploration industry but introduced me to a fundamental element of working in the mining community, the ‘art’ of networking. The organizers encouraged students like myself to speak with industry members and to develop the career connections required to be successful. Five years later, I continue to stay in contact with several of the industry professionals and other students that I met during this valuable student program.

As a mature student returning to school after two decades proved to be rewarding. My nomination to be part of S-IMEW came as a surprise, which I graciously accepted. The industry experts you meet on this excursion will help your future career. The other winners of the program in 2010 were fantastic and their diversity and receptiveness made the experience a success for all involved.

S-IMEW has had a profound impact on my career and in none of the ways I expected. The friendships forged with my workshop colleagues has been a a true gift professionally. Beginning my career with that strong network of peers already in place lead to professional opportunities I could not have anticipated and am forever grateful for.
